SCHOOL SHAPE UP INITIATIVE

The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam - Mikocheni is on a mission to give the young people from poor neighborhoods a shot at a successful future life by improving their access to quality primary school education.

While education in the country is free, the public schools are in deplorable conditions and the quality of education offered is poor. This compromises the future of the students who are already from disadvantaged communities.

…….One school at a time

Our first school to shape up is Mkunguni primary school. The school, started in 2002 , has a population of over 1200 children. It lacks a library, teaching aids and the school buildings need renovation. However, the urgent concern is the poor state of the school’s sanitation facilities. The school has 10 toilets only, 2 for teachers, 4 for boys and 4 for girls. This translates to 17 teachers per toilet and almost 166 children per toilet!

Precious learning time is wasted queuing for toilets by both teachers and pupils. The existing toilets also need renovation.
