Safari safety tips for first-time travellers

Neema Kileo · July 2, 2025

Wildlife, vehicles, remote camps, and unfamiliar health environments, the risks are real but manageable.

The Actual Safety Picture

Safaris are not dangerous in the way first-time travellers sometimes imagine. The risks are real but predictable and manageable with simple preparation.

Wildlife. Follow your guide's instructions without exception. Do not get out of vehicles in unfenced areas. Do not make noise at night near camp. These rules exist for clear reasons.

Health. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for Tanzania and Zambia. Consult a travel medicine clinic 4-6 weeks before departure. Yellow fever vaccination is required if entering from certain countries.

Vehicles. Ask about vehicle maintenance. Older vehicles are a false economy, a breakdown in the Serengeti is an expensive inconvenience. Quality operators maintain their fleet to schedule.

Travel insurance. Non-negotiable. Ensure your policy covers emergency evacuation, remote safari areas require specialist air ambulance coverage.
